Recently, I was gifted a skin fridge, and needless to say, it is one of my favorite things I received for my birthday this year. Not only is it refreshing to put chilled skincare products on my face, but it is also very attractive on my vanity. Keep reading to hear my take on skincare fridges– which one I have, why I think it’s great, and what the heck it’s supposed to do for your skin;)
So first, the skin fridge science. Keeping your skincare chilled actually extends the life/the effectiveness of the active ingredients in your products. Products begin to oxidixe the moment they are exposed to air, and refrigerating them slows down this process. Additionally, it supresses the fungal and bacterial growth that begins once the product has been touched and contaminated by fingers (source- Dr. Purvisha Patel, founder of Visha Skincare and board-certified dermatologist).
Putting cold skincare products on your face also helps with de-puffing and boosts circulation. It also helps tighten the skin while simultaneously refreshing it.
However, there are certain products that should be refrigerated and certain products that should not–I included a list below; there is a star by those that should definitely be refrigerated and a star by those that can be refrigerated to extend the shelf life.
REFRIGERATE:
- eye creams/gels*
- anti-itch creams*
- sunscreen*
- nail polish*
- perfume (however as long as it’s not in the sun, it’s fine)
- acne reduction products*
- lipstick and liquid makeup- foundation, mascara, liquid eyeliner, etc.
- aloe vera*
- organic and/or natural beauty products (they don’t contain the parabens, preservatives, sulfates, etc. to make them last longer and will likely spoil or grow bacteria if not kept cold)*
- water-based serums, lotions, or gels*
- products that contain Vitamin C*
- retinoids*
- face masks (not clay based ones though)*
- jade and rose quartz face rollers, gua sha stones, other face rollers and massage tools that don’t vibrate*
If you do decide you would like to try refrigerating your skincare, make sure you use a micro-fridge specifically designed to store skincare products. The temperature of your typical fridge found in your kitchen is actually too cold to store skincare, as it can cause your products to freeze and the active ingredients to break down (basically if you don’t do it properly, it backfires– so if you want to do it, invest in a skincare fridge).
Below are some pictures of my skincare fridge. I have the 4 Liter Cooluli Mini Fridge in Blue, and you can buy it off Amazon for $50 US. As for the stickers, the watermelon is from Redbubble, the Glossier is from a Glossier package (of course lol), and the popsicle and balloon animal stickers are from a Pura Vida package.

Thanks for visiting!

What a great idea. I am going to get a skin fridge too. The rollers must feel wonderful on your skin when cold.
