You may have seen it somewhere or heard about it from someone, but what exactly is micellar water?
Well, micellar water is a skincare product used to remove makeup or even just cleanse the skin, and it was first adopted by the Parisians, who used it as a substitute for water in terms of cleansing their face. During the time period in which it was invented, the water in Paris was very harsh on the skin and could even cause breakouts, and this resulted in the invention of micellar water by BIODERMA in 1991. Micellar water has been a favorite of beauty gurus and dermatologists for quite some time now, but how exactly does it work?
Micellar water is formulated with purified water, glycerin and other moisturizers, and mild surfactants (cleansing compounds). Microscopic molecules found in these surfactants join together to form micelles, a variety of spherical chemical structure that pulls dirt and oil off the skin.
Whilst removing makeup, dirt, and oil from your pores, the micellar water also acts as a toner. Additionally, it is alcohol-free, meaning that it could help promote skin hydration and the reduction of both irritation and inflammation.
The glycerin in the formula effectively aids the retention of moisture and some say that it can even help speed up the process of healing wounds. The combination of the glycerin and the micelles can also increase the permeability of your skin, making it possible for cleansers to reach deeper layers of the skin, in turn cleansing more effectively.
The micelles are larger in size and are therefore unable to penetrate the skin, unlike more aggressive cleansers and harsher skincare products such as toners containing alcohol. Essentially, this inability to penetrate the skin helps the natural skin barrier remain intact, preventing both the over-drying of sensitive skin and the aggravation of irritated skin.
Micellar water is versatile and can be used on all skin types. Because it does not contain alcohol or drying surfactants, it doesn’t leave the skin feeling dehydrated or tight. It is good for people who have sensitive skin and/or skin conditions like rosacea, acne, excema, and dermatitis, as it does not contain drying ingredients like soaps and/or alcohols. As for those with oily skin, it unblocks clogged pores that could potentially become inflamed and turn into pimples and/or blemishes.
While it may seem like micellar water is one variety of product, it actually can come in several different varieties–there is micellar water formulated for those who wish to mattify, hydrate, protect their sensitive skin, remove waterproof makeup, etc.
However, if you choose to use micellar water, it should never be used alone. But paired with another gentle facial cleanser, micellar water will help to protect the pH balance of your skin by catching all the leftover residue missed by the cleanser.
Micellar water doesn’t damage the skin and is also cheaper and more environmentally friendly than traditional makeup wipes, assuming you use it with some form of reusable cotton round (which can be found on Amazon) or cloth.
Well, that was a mouthful. Now on to what I think.
I think that micellar water is a great addition to your skincare routine, as long as it is used in addition to a facial cleanser. For example, if you used micellar water on a reusable cotton round, cleansed with your normal cleanser, and then did the rest of your skincare routine. I have been using micellar water to take off my makeup for quite awhile now, and it is a much gentler and quicker method of removing makeup. I have also more recently started using it before washing my face twice a day and have noticed that my skin has improved, although this is in combination with washing my pillowcase frequently and keeping with the rest of my skincare routine.
